Music Savages Burning Man Theme Camp 2011

“The Recycled T-Shirt Arena”

An intimate multi-level, shaded arena with a recycled T-shirt outer skin, hosting daily electronic dance music events from noon until midnight. Join us for a host of costume theme parties, ridiculous accoutramons, sleazy antics and an eclectic mix of internationally recognized musical talent.

We are an LA based group which features DJs, artists, producers, comedians and business professionals. We are known for our quirky themed music events in the notoriously trendy Hollywood scene, which combine quality music, eccentric personalities, side-splitting gimmicks, and custom made accoutramons. The Music Savage camp for 2011 is primarily a daytime sound/lounge camp. To compliment our focus, we have a core group of campers that are excited to provide a range of daily activities and services to the Burning Man Community, including, but not limited to: Legal Advice, Specialized Dance Lessons, Dusty Lawn Games, A Mustache Photo Booth and Sleazy Boozing Methods. Last year we designed and successfully implemented a custom shade structure; this year we will be applying it's core concepts to construct a visually appealing, multi-level, shaded arena. Throughout the year, we will be collecting recycled T-shirts which will be sewn together to create an outer skin for the entire structure. Interior lighting will illuminate the slogan adorned shirts, creating a multi-colored nighttime glow and simultaneously acting as a basic wind barrier. We will use this structure to host daily costume theme parties with performances by internationally acclaimed musical talent. While we are excited for the events on our schedule, this camp is not intended to be a "Club Area", but rather an intimate lounge setting for approximately 100 visitors.

The Music Savages Camp for 2011 is an intimate daytime sound/lounge camp powered by solar panels equipped with a Multi-Access, Sun-Tracking System to optimize daily exposure angles (thus minimizing its overall carbon footprint) - running from the hours of noon to midnight. The focus of this 28,000 square foot plot is a custom designed, 40’x40’, shaded arena – a space defined by eleven 5’x10’ platforms of varying heights placed end-to-end around its perimeter to form a snake-like, spiral catwalk up to a 6’ tall “DJ Tree House”.  A skin of recycled T-Shirts will wrap around the structure, providing: 1) shelter from the wind an elements 2) a stylistic collection of one of the world’s most common items and 3) stimulating visuals as the LED lighting glows from within its frame. As an eclectic mix of hand selected music plays into the shaded arena, campers and guests can enjoy dancing, dressing up for daily theme parties, relaxing in hammocks, playing challenging games of Extreme Bocce Ball on our 30’x30’ multi-level court, taking pictures in the Savage Mustache Photo-Booth, and heckling from underneath the Noodle Dip Shade Lounge.

A 10’ wide alley around the perimeter of the entire plot will be used to handle the placement of RVs and other vehicles as they arrive and depart at different times throughout the week. A 20’ wide strip along the front street will be used for Playa transport parking (bikes and visiting mutant vehicles). We’ve allotted 20’x30’ parking spaces for each of the 8 RVs that plan to join us. This will give them enough room to set up their individual shades and chill areas. A 15’x105’ area at the back of the camp will be used for vehicle parking and can be accessed via the ally. The remaining 80’x85’ area will be reserved for general camping. We expect to have a mixture of tents, yurts, and small structures, with average footprints of 12’x12’ plus additional room for tie-downs and walk-ways.

The Music Savages T-Shirt Arena will be the most intricate undertaking of the camp. Through stress tests and sample structures, we’ve determined that it will be constructed with a mixture of 2”x4” and 4”x4” boards held together by ¼” thick bolts, screws and other assorted hardware. A unique feature that we’ve adopted from our 2010 Camp is the use of 18” long lag bolts to secure the framing to the Playa. This method held up under extreme conditions, and had minimal impact on the Playa since these bolts could simply be backed out with a wrench – no digging and no pounding was needed. Three 20’x20’ shades will run from posts along the perimeter to a sturdy centerpiece which will serve as an art piece in itself. Tension in these shades will be achieved by using ratchet tie-downs. The surface area of any given platform will be able to handle above average traffic; although, lower traffic is expected. T-Shirts collected throughout 2011 from our campers will be sewn together in a quilt-like-fashion to create the outer skin. The silk screened images and slogans of this skin will capture glimpses into the various pop-culture movements, individual tendencies, and quirky trends that often get buried in the bottoms of so many dressers.

Finally, and most importantly, each of our campers is fully prepared to handle any recycling and trash they may create throughout the week. That being said, we will be hauling in an empty, closed shell trailer to handle any unforeseen excess of recycling, trash and left over items from our campers and the visitors we will have. We will have multiple individuals assigned to prevent trash build-up and playa damage. They will conduct daily sweeps and coordinate campers' exits as well as the final camp sweep.
